State Lawmakers Address School Security

The Ohio legislature, along with many other state legislatures, are addressing a key area of safety in our schools. Previous laws and regulations required fire and emergency drills to be conducted periodically. The new laws include provisions to assist first responders in dealing with emergencies.

The recent school shootings and violent weather events have highlighted the need for infrastructure information regarding our schools. One of the key points of information for emergency personnel is up to date blueprints of all campus buildings. The new laws will require that the blueprints be on file with relevant police and fire departments, but not be filed for public access.

Up to date blueprints are an essential tool for rescue efforts in the case of fire, floods, severe weather and environmental crisis. They are also a key strategic tool for law enforcement in dealing with hostage and school violence.
