Is your school prepared for an emergency?

Recent events have state legislators trying to make schools more safe and secure. Many of the new and proposed laws focus on making sure that schools have accurate floor plans on file and accessible to first responders. For newly built schools, the floor plans are probably ready for compliance with the new legislation. But, for older schools, the plans on file often do not include changes that have been made to the buildings.

For older buildings, compliance with the new laws will require that all floor plans be brought up to an "as-built" condition. That means that any changes or alterations to the structure and building systems including electrical, plumbing, communications and ventilation should be reflected in the current, on-file, floor plans. Having accurate floor plans available for First Responders is important for saving lives. It is also the least expensive step you can take.

For the past few years, we have been providing "as-built" services for facility managers, building contractors and architects. Our service often begins with conversion of old blueprint floor plans into files that can be used by architects and engineers. Our team then does a thorough survey of the existing buildings. They document all variations from the existing plans and incorporate those variations into the plans. This brings the plans to an "as-built" condition.

Some laws will also require that those floor plans be available in a "digital" format. This takes more than just scanning old floor plans and having them a bitmap images. The old floor plans have to be available in a format that can be viewed with clearly defined lines and dimensions, even on the mobile devices used by police, fire and other first responders. Once your plans are brought up to an as-built condition, converting them to a compliant digital format is simple and inexpensive.
